In 2024, elderly Texans (over 60 years old) were victims of 9,472 scams and lost $490 million—and those are only the scams and losses that were reported to the FBI. June 15 was World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, which was created to highlight abuse (physical, financial, psychological) that many eldery people are subject to.
You work with all kinds of clients, and some of them are likely over 60. What can you do?
- The US Department of Justice has resources to help spot such financial abuse, including real estate and investment scams.
- The Seniors Real Estate Specialist designation helps REALTORS® meet the needs of maturing Americans when selling, buying, relocating, or refinancing residential or investment properties.
- The American Land Title Association published a brief with statistics and links to resources.
- AARP has a scams and fraud page, highlighting the latest scams and how to avoid them.
Share these resources with older clients, and use them to recognize potential scams.
